Chickens: Barnevelder

The Barnevelder is a rare breed. Originating from the district of Barneveld, Holland between c. 1850 and 1875.

Young "Willow"
A primary attraction to the breed was for their eggs. They are dark brown in colour or good size, making them quite desirable. The Barnavelder dark brown feathers with single or double lacing, classed as heavy, they are medium sized (3.2-3.6kg).
The Barnevelder is easy to care for and excellent layers (up to 150 eggs per year) of dark brown eggs.

They are Docile and tame yet active and easy to contain.  If keeping with other breeds, you will need to be sure they are getting enough to eat as they can be easily picked on as they are so placid.

Do you see Sweetie in the back ground, snoozing in her burrow?
