Hi friends,
Carmela De Palma (nee Bologna) 1924-2012 As many of you already know, Nonna passed away peacefully last Thursday, surrounded by her loving family. |
Yollie wanted to share the concluding eulogy she delivered at her funeral mass yesterday.Nonna
Carmela loved and embraced the diverse culture around her, making life-long
friends easily.
Language was never a
barrier for Nonna. She spoke in kindness, generosity and friendship, her laugh
and smile, that I miss most was infectious as it was beautiful.
Nonna
Carmela had a unique and individual relationship with each of her grand and
great grand-children. Talking to
Nonna meant her un-divided attention, usually with your hand held in hers. Truly wanting to hear what we had to say. She
treasured this time.
Aside from
friends, family, television and her soapies, Nonna’s very favourite thing was
the telephone. But, no matter how we tried, she just never trusted that her
voice would be carried the distance – so she simply shouted!!
One of my
favourite memories was during school holidays. Nonna would have Yvanna and I
over to make Pizzas. On arriving we would find all the bases stretched out on
trays and the topping ready to assemble. With the first batch just coming out
of the oven, ready to eat. She always thought of everything. I loved this special time with Nonna.
Saying “tarra” (bye bye) or intending to leave was the hardest
thing to do. You would have to start the ritual a good half hour before you
actually wanted to go. She would look so sad saying “Eh no, Stare un po' più” “Mamma
e papà possono andare, ma voi rimanete con Nonna ” … and so it would
continue. This is how it was with Nonna
she loved your company never wanting you to leave.
So that is
how my “Nonna Mela” will remain in my heart.
Nonna queste
storie e altri milioni sono nel mio cuore per sempre, riposare in pace e tara
Thanks for stopping by everyone.
Sweetie
